Newsletter 01-18-05
I had finished singing and was
almost ready to pack up the CD table. A nice lady walked up and introduced
herself and informed me that there were all kinds of food downstairs in the
fellowhip hall, and I was invited to come down for some refreshments before I
left. I thanked her and continued to pack up. After everything was loaded, I
decided that a little something to eat might be good, so I headed down the
stairs to find the food. I rounded the corner and much to my surprise were
tables and tables of all kinds of food. It was like a "Baptist Buffet". I
talked to several people and tested almost everything there. My little snack
turned into a full meal and by the time I was ready to go, I was stuffed. I
said my "thank you's" and started up the steps. Just as I was about to the top
of the steps, someone at the bottom of the steps called my name. I turned
around and there was a sweet little woman with a plate covered in foil. She
said "I noticed you didn't have any of these, so I wrapped you some to take with
you". Evidently she had made whatever it was and wanted me to try it so I
again said "well, thank you" and accepted the plate and headed for the parking
lot.
Just as I pulled out of the parking lot, my cell phone rang. That call lasted a
good thirty minutes, and by the time it was over, I was on the interstate
determined to drive several hours before stopping. I forgot all about the plate
the lady had fixed for me. About three hours later I noticed that plate over in
the passenger seat. By then, I had decided that something to snack on might be
good again (yes, I eat a lot) so I started to unwrap the foil to see what was in
there. I had imagined that it would be cookies or brownies or something sweet.
But I was wrong. As I took the foil off the plate, I discovered eight
meatballs covered in gravy. And of course after all this time, they were
cold. I took one bite and quickly decided that cold meat balls and gravy was
not what I wanted to snack on . I had already wadded the foil up and it was in
the floorboard, I couldn't reach it. Now I had to decide whether to pull over
and try to flatten the foil out and rewrap the meatballs or throw the meat balls
out the window! I chose the latter. Then..... the phone rings again!
I put my headset on and continued the phone conversation. I decided while I was
driving that I could hold on to the plate and sling the meatballs out the
passenger window and keep driving. Still talking on the phone, I hit the
button to roll the passenger window down. I picked up the plate and slung it
like a frisbee, holding on to the plate but aiming the meatballs and gravy
toward the window.
SPLATT!!!!! All over the window was meatballs and gravy. I watched in
disbelief as cold thick gravy slid down the window onto the door panel! The
meatballs had bounced from the glass back down onto the seat and into the
floorboard. STUPID ME!!!!! I had hit the wrong window button and had rolled
the rear window on the passenger side down instead of the front seat passenger
window. I just started to laugh. The more I watched the gravy slide down to
the bottom of the window, the more I laughed. The window was a mess. It would
have taken a good water hose and some elbow grease to clean it off. Here I was
on the interstate, in the middle of nowhere, about midnight , with meatballs and
gravy on the INSIDE of my window! I laughed til I cried. I couldn't see out
that window for the gravy. I couldn't even see the rear view mirror for a
meatball that had decided to stick to the window. By the time I got home, the
gravy had dried and the meatballs were hard as a rock! The next day, I had to
clean it all up. HAVE YOU EVER TRIED TO SCRAPE GRAVY OFF A WINDOW?????? (I
hope not)
I thought of that incident last night and I had to laugh all over again.
Sometimes we do stupid things and we have to look thru the consequences to see
what's ahead. Sometimes it's even hard to see what's ahead. But we keep
driving, hoping that we catch a glimpse of something substantial that will
encourage us to keep going on.
Many of you have been such an encouragement to me as I have tried to keep
focused on the calling in my life. Thank you so much for helping me see through
the gravy!
